You may take advantage of modern keyboards which have additional Multimedia Keys. You should click that keys while SWF.max window is in focus.

The following keys are supported:

Playback Controls
Play, Pause, Stop, Next, Previous

Volume Controls
Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute

Beside that you can use a lot more keyboard shortcuts. See various menu titles to check if a particular item can be accessed from a keyboard. For example Ctrl+O opens a file and F3 shows Media Browser. You can also enable Handy Hot Keys for simplified controls or use your mouse.
